What do the following have in common: Ginseng, Ashwagandha, Astralagus, Goji Berry, Liquorice Root, Tulsi, Milk Thistle and Turmeric? They're all adaptogens – a select group of smart herbs and spices that support the body's natural ability to deal with stress. They deserve the title 'smart' because they adapt their function according to the specific needs of the body. For instance, Ginseng boosts the immune system, while Astragalus combats fatigue, the Goji Berry boosts energy and Turmeric charges up the brain function. A diet rich in adaptogens is said to ward off stress, giving your immune system greater resilience.
One of the best ways to add adaptogens to your diet is via home-made teas, soups or smoothies. Here's a tasty way of combining Turmeric and Ginseng in a probiotic smoothie to stimulate the mind and body.
1 small banana
1/2 ripe mango
grated turmeric root or 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder
1/2 tsp off powdered ginseng
a few fresh mint leaves
250ml soya kefir (non-dairy) or goats milk kefir (dairy)
Blend all the ingredients together including a couple of mint leaves. Pour into a glass and add a dash of lime. A stimulating pick-me-up for when you're feeling weary.
